Nowe tendencje w dziedzinie zabezpieczania i konserwacji zasobów archiwalnych

Przemysław Wojciechowski, Lepiej zapobiegać, niż leczyć - nowe tendencje w dziedzinie zabezpieczania i konserwacji zasobów archiwalnych, w: Archeion, t. 108, wyd. NDAP, Warszawa 2005, ss. 13-31

"Przemysław Wo j c i e c h o w s k i , Prevention is Better than Cure — New Tendencies in the Area of
Preservation and Conservation of Archival Holdings. During the last decade of the 20th c., the approach
to the conservation of archival collections was radically revised. Traditionally understood conservation
is expensive and it has to be limited to objects of particular value. People became aware of the need to
develop the holdings preservation policy in order to prevent damage to archival collections and, to the
extent possible, slow down the deterioration of carriers. This policy has to include preventive measures
(hygiene of the holdings, use of durable paper) to prevent various types of damage, measures to liquidate
the damage already done and measures to protect the content (transfer to other carriers).
Digitalisation of archival documents may take a very special place in the preservation of holdings,
enabling access to information from a distance, complete eliminating the user’s physical contact with
the archival document. The development of digital techniques also enables the exchange of data and
archival information management.
The preservation of archival materials became an interdisciplinary domain which requires the
cooperation of all the employees of any archival institution. In the international perspective, there are
numerous institutions and organisations dealing with a widely understood preservation and safeguarding
of archival collections. There are also many projects under implementation, financed from the EU
funds, aiming at the preservation and improved accessibility of archival materials."
